The Machame Route is a popular southern approach to Kilimanjaro, starting on the forested south‑west slopes. It offers highly scenic, varied terrain—rainforest, moorland, alpine desert—and close views of Kibo and Mawenzi. Typically done in 6–7 days, it’s steeper and more challenging than Rongai, though the 7‑day itinerary improves acclimatization. Best for fit trekkers who want dramatic scenery and don’t mind heavier crowds; summit pushes usually go via Barafu to Uhuru Peak with descent on Mweka.
